Does everthing need to fail?

i was really pleased to attend the Philips sense and simplicity event at the Excel centre - not my favorite place but worth the effort this time around. we have known the design team for many a year and get on well. all the company big wigs were there (loving the bosses speach) and its good to work out that they are relatively normal human beings, even if shrouded by the suit uniform that seems to accompany those who think they need to address their sense of self worth within organisations. powerful stuff. Philips were addressing the idea of where they are going with projects expected to come on line over the next 3 -5 years. the guys addressing the 20 to 30 year ahead issues are the really interesting lot, but no sign of their investigations were on show.

I must admit most of it i would run a mile from - i dont want an electronic fitness trainer in my bedroom thank you very much and i dont want to be told my body fat percentage by a mirror in my bathroom first thing every day. who buys these things? though i liked the 'sunlight enhancement' thingeys. The little portable one aimed at business executives catching up on rays whilst at the airport looks like one of those powder dispensers women are seen to use and maybe an element of confusion and comedy will come about - what is that guy doing, powdering his nose under a clear blue illumination. oh, and some of the new lightbulbs are getting nicer and nicer.

but all these things are going to break aren't they. will it be the twopence component that buggers up the whole thing resulting in lengthy delays for repair or more likely throwing the thing out. Someone was explaining to me how designers are required to design things to break, sony have a special term for this apparently. always just after the warranty expires. there's a friend of mine who's laptop is ruined because a 4pence fan has broken. he managed to find the component name but is told they wont supply him one or repair the thing. i hate this waste.

so, what do you think and what is the stupidest component to have failed, thereby rendering the whole thing useless. do tell me.

the general strategy from microsoft to anyone else is get to the market first and sort the problems later. first is best, later comes reliability. it might work as i know people who delay the launch of products until all the glitches are worked out only to be overtaken by faster copyists.

do you care as long as you have the sexiest item about your person?

no sign at philips, or anywhere else that i can see, for electronic gadgetry to be designed so that it can be easily repaired. is there a morality issue here for the designer. clearly its not much of an issue for the boss or the accountant. in fact the issue remains - more waste, more profit. its the way business is designed to function. so dont expect corporate responsibility when the first responsibility for a listed company is return for investors.
